Johnson Pitched Character Who “Knew Fashion” to Blunt

Dwayne Johnson recently disclosed an amusing attempt to break into the fashion film world. The action star admitted he campaigned for a role in The Devil Wears Prada 2, telling Emily Blunt he was prepared to wear size 15 heels. This revelation demonstrates Johnson’s desire to showcase his versatility beyond the action and comedy roles that have defined his filmography.

Johnson’s recruitment campaign took place during filming of The Smashing Machine, where he stars alongside Blunt in a dramatic portrayal of MMA legend Mark Kerr’s life. As Blunt prepared for her role in the Devil Wears Prada sequel, Johnson approached her about joining the cast. He envisioned a character with fashion expertise and effortless appeal, someone who would naturally fit within the franchise’s sophisticated setting.

Blunt confirmed Johnson’s story, acknowledging he made a legitimate attempt to secure a role. Returning to the sequel alongside original cast members Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, Blunt responded to Johnson’s interest with characteristic wit. She playfully commented that Johnson would look attractive in heels, showcasing the friendly working relationship they’ve cultivated.

Though Johnson’s campaign proved unsuccessful, Blunt ensured he remained connected to the sequel’s production. She regularly sent behind-the-scenes videos from the New York City set, particularly footage captured before emerging onto streets filled with spectators. Johnson described these updates with excitement, noting the crowd reactions resembled those typically reserved for major pop star sightings.

Under David Frankel’s direction and based on Lauren Weisberger’s novels, The Devil Wears Prada 2 will premiere on May 1, 2026. The original installment premiered at the LA Film Festival in June 2006 and left a lasting impact on cinema. While Johnson won’t appear in this sequel, his enthusiasm demonstrates the franchise’s enduring ability to attract interest from diverse segments of Hollywood.
