AI Study: Over 55-hour Workweeks Linked to Stroke, Heart Disease Risk

In a noteworthy analysis, neurologist Dr. Sudhir Kumar has shed light on the potential health risks associated with long working hours, providing insights on the ideal work-life balance. On July 15, Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of limiting weekly work hours to maintain health, drawing from scientific research. According to him, the optimal range is approximately 35–40 hours per week, as exceeding this can increase health risks. More specifically, working 55 hours or more each week significantly raises the likelihood of cardiovascular issues, such as stroke and heart disease.

Dr. Kumar highlighted research findings indicating that individuals who work 55 hours or more weekly face a 35% greater risk of stroke and a 17% higher chance of developing ischaemic heart disease compared to those working within the healthier range of 35–40 hours. He also referenced data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), which estimated that prolonged working hours led to approximately 745,000 global deaths in 2016 due to stroke and heart disease.

Beyond cardiovascular concerns, Dr. Kumar pointed out that excessive work hours are linked to a host of other health issues. He noted that long hours can result in poor sleep quality, fatigue, burnout, anxiety, depression, elevated blood pressure, and decreased productivity and concentration. Additionally, overworking can lead to more workplace injuries and errors, along with reduced time for exercise, healthy eating, and family life.

Dr. Kumar advised that the focus should not solely be on reducing work hours but on working smarter and ensuring adequate recovery. For maintaining health and productivity, he recommended setting a goal of 35–40 working hours per week when feasible, avoiding the routine of working 55 hours or more, and incorporating regular movement breaks during the day. Ensuring 7–9 hours of sleep nightly, exercising regularly, and reserving at least one day each week for rest and personal activities were also part of his recommendations.

Summarizing his guidance, Dr. Kumar remarked that achieving success is akin to running a marathon rather than a sprint, emphasizing that safeguarding one’s health is an essential investment for a long and productive career.
