Iran Develops Advanced Zone Technology for Strait of Hormuz Control

Iran has announced plans to create an “exclusion zone” near the Strait of Hormuz, aiming at vessels it suspects are trying to traverse this strategically crucial waterway. Mohsen Rezaei, recently appointed as the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, detailed that this zone will stretch from the area where the U.S. has established a naval blockade, extending through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Arabian Gulf. According to Rezaei, ships identified as attempting to enter this zone with the intention of crossing the strait might face inclusion on an Iranian sanctions list.

This development comes amidst a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, marked by a U.S. military strike on three Iranian oil tankers following Iran’s ballistic missile attack on U.S. warships. Adding to the tensions, Iran claimed it had targeted an unmanned U.S. vessel that was allegedly trying to enter the strait, a claim that the U.S. military has denied. The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital corridor for the global supply of oil and gas, and disruptions here continue to provoke concerns over energy prices and the broader global economic stability.

In response to escalating tensions, the United States has bolstered its naval presence to maintain a blockade on Iranian ports, aiming to impede Tehran’s oil export capabilities. The U.S. has also ramped up economic pressures on Iran following the breakdown of recent negotiations. Despite these tensions, American officials report that significant amounts of oil are still passing through the Strait of Hormuz, aided by naval protection and alternative pipeline routes in the region.

Rezaei affirmed that while Iran remains committed to diplomatic efforts, it will seek more robust guarantees in any future agreements. Talks between Tehran and Washington have reached an impasse, with both sides continuing to accuse each other of violations. The geopolitical strife surrounding the strait underscores its critical importance, as both nations vie to assert control over this key maritime passage.
