The Bullet and the Ban: A Deadly Combination in Nepal

In Nepal, the combination of a restrictive ban and a deadly bullet has proven to be a catastrophic mix, plunging the country into its worst political crisis in years. The government’s attempt to control its citizens’ online expression, followed by its willingness to use lethal force to suppress their physical protest, has created a perfect storm of public outrage.

The ban on social media was the initial offense. It was a clear act of censorship that told the Nepalese people, especially the youth, that their voices were not valued and were considered a threat. This alone was enough to spark significant demonstrations, as it touched upon fundamental issues of rights and freedom in the digital age.

The use of bullets to enforce this ban was the fatal escalation. When security forces fired on protesters, the conflict was no longer about a specific policy. It became a fundamental struggle between the people and a state that was willing to kill them to enforce its will. The 19 deaths transformed the protesters’ grievance from a political disagreement into a moral crusade for justice.

This deadly combination has backed the government into a corner. By linking censorship with violence, they have fused two powerful sources of public anger. Reversing the ban is no longer enough because they cannot reverse the deaths. The government is now facing a crisis of legitimacy from which it may not be able to recover, having shown its citizens its capacity for both repression and violence.
