Qatar kicked off their 27th Arabian Gulf Cup journey with a decisive 2-0 victory against defending champions Bahrain at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in Jeddah on Thursday. The win places Qatar in a strong position in Group B, trailing only the United Arab Emirates, who earlier secured a 4-0 triumph over Yemen.
The match came to life in the 61st minute when Boualem Khoukhi found the back of the net with a header from an Akram Afif free-kick, giving Qatar the lead. The dynamics of the game shifted in the 70th minute as Qatar was reduced to 10 men due to Ahmed Fathi’s second yellow card.
Despite having a numerical advantage, Bahrain could not capitalize on the situation. They pushed forward in search of an equalizer but were unable to break through Qatar’s defense. The match was ultimately sealed in Qatar’s favor in the ninth minute of stoppage time when Hassan Al Haydos scored from the penalty spot after being fouled in the box.
This result puts Qatar in a promising position as they prepare to face Yemen in their next group match. Meanwhile, Bahrain will look to bounce back in their upcoming encounter against the UAE. As the tournament progresses, both teams will aim to secure their places in the subsequent stages.
