The Trial Run: Why This Might Be the Most Important Pet Travel Tip

Of all the tips for pet travel, the “trial run” is perhaps the most overlooked and the most impactful, especially for first-time travelers or anxious pets. This simple act of practice can lay the groundwork for a lifetime of happy adventures.

A trial run demystifies the experience for your pet. The fear of the unknown is a major source of anxiety. A short, controlled practice trip teaches them what to expect: they will get in the carrier, the car will move, and then something pleasant will happen. It removes the terrifying element of surprise from the main event.

It’s also a diagnostic tool for you. A trial run allows you to spot potential problems in a low-stakes environment. Does your pet get motion sick? Do they bark incessantly? Is the carrier not as secure as you thought? It’s far better to discover these issues on a 20-minute drive around town than three hours into a cross-country journey.

To be effective, the trial run must be positive. Start with just sitting in the car with the engine off, giving treats. Progress to a short drive down the block. Build up to a trip to their favourite park. By associating the car and the carrier with fun outcomes, you are actively reprogramming their response to travel from fear to anticipation.
