Mark Rydell, the esteemed director known for his Academy Award-nominated work on “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at the age of 97. The filmmaker died of natural causes at a retirement community dedicated to entertainment industry professionals in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.

Rydell’s most celebrated achievement came with the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” which featured an iconic cast including Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a critical and commercial triumph, earning 10 Oscar nominations. Both Henry Fonda and Hepburn received acting awards, although Rydell himself was edged out for Best Director by Warren Beatty for his work on “Reds.” The movie was a significant box-office success, grossing over $119 million globally, and it marked Henry Fonda’s final film role, securing him his only Oscar win.

Among his other notable directing credits are films like “The Fox,” “The Reivers,” “Cinderella Liberty,” “The Rose,” “The River,” and “For the Boys.”

Before earning acclaim as a director, Rydell began his career in the entertainment industry as an actor.
