Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz if U.S. Lifts Sanctions

Iran has indicated that the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz could occur within six days, contingent on the United States accepting Tehran’s conditions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that negotiations might resume on the seventh day if progress is made. Among Iran’s stipulations are the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and the cessation of hostilities across regional fronts.

The discussions are complicated by differing priorities between the two nations. The U.S. is keen to address issues related to Iran’s nuclear program, including uranium enrichment, right from the start. In contrast, Tehran is focused on prioritizing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and restoring security in this vital maritime corridor. The strait, a crucial global shipping route, carried about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas trade before the current conflict, and any prolonged closure could significantly impact international energy markets.

In a separate statement, Iran’s Defence Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi cautioned that any renewed U.S. military action would result in “enormous damage” to Washington and its regional allies, expressing confidence in Iran’s capability to respond to further attacks. Despite the ongoing tensions, both countries remain at an impasse regarding the conditions necessary to end hostilities, leaving the future of negotiations and the status of the Strait of Hormuz uncertain.
