The Great Game in the North: Israel’s Moves Yield Talks with Syria, Lebanon

A new phase of the “Great Game” is unfolding on Israel’s northern border, and Jerusalem’s latest moves appear to be paying off. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday that the war against Hezbollah has successfully checkmated the old status quo, leading to peace talks with Syria and a new opening with Lebanon.

The most significant move on the board was the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, a key player aligned with Iran. This has allowed the new Syrian government to pivot and enter into direct negotiations with Israel. A Syrian official has signaled that they are looking to finalize a deal on security arrangements by year’s end.

In Lebanon, Israel’s strategy is to keep Hezbollah in check with continued military strikes, while supporting the U.S. effort to promote the Lebanese state as the dominant player. This pressure has forced Beirut’s hand, leading to the government’s decision to finally disarm the powerful militia.

Netanyahu explained his government’s winning strategy. “Our victories in Lebanon against Hezbollah have opened a window,” he said, positioning the war as a decisive move in this geopolitical chess match. He confirmed that this has led to “some progress” in negotiations with Syria.

The results of this game are now visible on the map. Syria is discussing the creation of a demilitarized zone, ceding control of a key strategic area. Lebanon is preparing to disarm Hezbollah in the south, altering the internal balance of power. Israel’s moves have successfully changed the entire board.
