The Hostage Deal: Hamas Commits to Freeing All Captives in Exchange for Peace

A definitive hostage deal is now on the table after Hamas committed on Saturday to freeing all Israeli captives in exchange for peace. The group’s agreement to release everyone, both living and deceased, is the centerpiece of its acceptance of a comprehensive proposal from Donald Trump aimed at ending the war in Gaza.

The commitment followed a severe ultimatum from Trump, who had given Hamas a Sunday evening deadline to respond. In its formal statement, Hamas linked the release of the hostages directly to a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Palestinian territories.

The deal also includes provisions for the political future of the region. Hamas has consented to a plan that would see a new, independent body of technocrats take over the administration of the Gaza Strip. This new government would be formed with broad Palestinian consensus and supported by regional powers.

While the hostage release is a firm commitment, Hamas noted that other aspects of the 20-point plan require further negotiation. The group stated that long-term political issues concerning Palestinian rights and sovereignty would be addressed through a separate, “comprehensive Palestinian national framework.”

Donald Trump celebrated the commitment, declaring that it paved the way for the safe and swift return of the hostages. He immediately called on Israel to stop its bombing campaign, framing the hostage deal as the key to unlocking a broader, lasting peace.
