The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max airplanes to check for potential cracks in a key structural element of the fuselage. This directive will impact approximately 471 aircraft, with inspections set to commence in September. The focus of these checks is the bear strap, a critical component comprising structural sheets that provide support around the aircraft’s exit doors. Previously, similar cracks were detected in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, leading to inspections of those aircraft.
As of now, there have been no reports of such cracks in the 737 Max fleet. However, due to the aircraft’s similar design and manufacturing process, regulators caution that the issue could potentially arise. The FAA has issued a warning that any undetected cracks in this component could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft.
Boeing has stated that it has been collaborating with airlines on this matter since it was first identified in 2019. The company supports the mandatory inspections, emphasizing that these checks are intended to detect and address any issues before they develop into critical problems.
The directive for inspections arises amidst ongoing scrutiny of the 737 Max, which has faced previous safety concerns and questions about manufacturing and engineering quality. The aircraft model was grounded worldwide after two tragic crashes that occurred in 2018 and 2019.
