Innovative Training Propels Hudson-Smith to Historic Third European 400m Title

Matt Hudson-Smith made a significant mark in the annals of athletics at the European Championships, held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, by becoming the first man to secure three titles in the 400m event. The 31-year-old delivered an outstanding performance in front of a supportive home crowd, clinching the gold with a time of 44.17 seconds. Positioned in lane nine, Hudson-Smith established an early lead and successfully held off his competitors despite a slight slowdown as he neared the finish line.

The race saw France’s Muhammad Abdallah Kounta claiming the silver medal with a timing of 44.40 seconds. Meanwhile, Jonas Phijffers from the Netherlands captured the bronze, setting a national record with his finish of 44.41 seconds. Hudson-Smith has a deep connection with the Birmingham area, having grown up there and trained at the Alexander Stadium since his early years, making this victory on his home track particularly poignant.

In addition to Hudson-Smith’s triumph, Britain celebrated another remarkable achievement in the women’s 400m hurdles. Emily Newnham showcased a strong final push to earn the silver medal, achieving a personal-best time of 53.33 seconds. Emma Zapletalova of Slovakia took the gold with a time of 52.91 seconds, while Fatoumata Binta Diallo from Portugal secured the bronze, setting a national record with her time of 53.55 seconds.

Hudson-Smith’s historic accomplishment and Newnham’s impressive performance contributed to a memorable day for British athletics, highlighting the talent and determination present in the team. As athletes from across Europe competed, the event underscored the spirit of sportsmanship and the pursuit of personal excellence that define the championships.
