Iran Utilizes Diplomatic Channels, Frees Detained US Citizen, Trump Announces

In a recent development, US President Donald Trump announced that Dena Karari, a dual citizen of the United States and Iran, has been released from detention in Iran. Karari, who had been held since December 2024, is now reportedly safe and in good condition following her departure from Iran.

President Trump shared the news via Truth Social, expressing that Karari’s release is seen as a gesture of goodwill from Iran. He confirmed that she is no longer in the country, and her well-being has been ensured. This development marks a significant move amid the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Jared Genser, Karari’s lawyer, has also confirmed her safety and stated that she is on her way back to the United States. He acknowledged the concerted efforts by the Trump administration in negotiating her release, highlighting its crucial role in the process.

Karari’s ordeal began in 2024 when she went to Iran to visit her family. However, after her arrival, Iranian authorities prevented her from leaving the country. The situation escalated following US and Israeli military actions against Iran in 2025, leading to charges of espionage against her by Iranian officials.

The release of Dena Karari unfolds against a backdrop of increased diplomatic strain between the US and Iran. Her freedom is perceived as a potential step towards easing the friction between the two nations, although the broader implications remain to be seen.
