Oman has put forward a proposal for unified guidelines to manage social media content among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, aiming to strengthen media coordination and safeguard regional unity. This initiative was introduced at the 29th meeting of GCC Information Ministers in Manama, Bahrain, which took place on Wednesday. Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi, Oman’s Minister of Information, led the delegation presenting this proposal.
The ministers at the meeting underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among GCC member states to maintain regional security and stability. They emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to tackle misleading, offensive, and harmful content circulating on both traditional and digital media platforms. The Omani proposal seeks to create a common framework that enhances the monitoring and documentation of such violations, promotes accountability, and supports appropriate legal action in line with each member state’s national laws.
In addition to the proposal, the ministers urged media organizations, journalists, and social media users to verify information diligently, rely on official sources, and refrain from spreading misleading or offensive material that could jeopardize inter-Gulf relations. The discussions also highlighted the significance of strengthening cooperation between Gulf media institutions and adapting to the rapid advancements in digital media and artificial intelligence.
The ministers recognized the crucial role of official media in fostering public awareness, disseminating accurate information, and showcasing the development achievements within the region. The meeting highlighted the necessity of coordinated Gulf media efforts to address emerging digital challenges, protect shared interests, and reinforce ties among the GCC member states.
